A Utah tech company is hoping to bring a collegiate optimism and mentoring mindset to the world of startups with the creation of AlphaHive – a new company that is bringing a unique vision to the startup incubator community.
In 2000, a pair of electrical engineering professors from Brigham Young University entered the private sector to create a company that would supply quality jobs for their students. Since then their company, Wavetronix, has grown from the underdog in the highly competitive traffic detection market to the worldwide market leader by bringing unique, technical solutions to the traffic sector.
“The reason we created Wavetronix was to create good jobs for our people,” says co-founder and CEO Dr. David Arnold.“Since then, we’ve found success, not just in the marketplace, but in our goal of providing good, quality jobs that improve the lives of our employees and their communities.”
Now, 20 years later, Wavetronix is expanding its influence with AlphaHive, a startup incubator designed to bring the fast-paced optimism Arnold saw in a collegiate setting, with the structure and lessons Wavetronix has learned during its two-decade rise toward market domination.
AlphaHive wants to help startups succeed by creating the type of collaborative, supportive environment found on college campuses where, Arnold says, professors and mentors offer technical and personal guidance. “This allows for rapid prototyping and iterative design, with a bigger focus on planting the seeds for discovery rather than trying to exploit a market,” Arnold says.
AlphaHive believes that investing in people beyond their technical abilities leads to success. Wavetronix has spent years creating an internal personal development program that teaches the vital soft skills often ignored in technical fields, but are required for effective collaboration, iteration and business management.
“AlphaHive startups have the unique opportunity to take full advantage of this training program,” says Dr. Larkin Hastriter, director of AlphaHive. “These skills, like communication, effective work habits, and interpersonal relationships, are absolutely vital, not just for creating a successful business from a startup, but to do so in a way that enriches the lives of its employees, which is what we want to see happen.”
